Hot Topic Question

A citizen asked me a hot topic question today. The question was, "So what is your position on working with or refusing to work with ICE if the occasion arises?"
My response to the question is clear. As a Sheriff, I will simply uphold the law. I will work within the guidelines of the law. I will work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when it is lawful, appropriate and tied to public safety.
The Sheriff's Office will not conduct immigration sweeps, random checks or target law-abiding residents. Our deputies are not immigration agents and I will not allow fear or profiling to undermine trust between law enforcement and the community.
We will cooperate with Federal Immigrations when there is a lawful detainer or warrant tied to an individual. We will not use deputies to enforce civil immigration laws or act outside our legal authority.
