Starting out the New Year
What an incredible day spent serving this community!
My team of cooks made the best black-eyed peas, smoked sausage, and cornbread I’ve ever tasted. None of this would have been possible without the incredible people who made it happen.
Prep work began yesterday afternoon. There was a dedicated group who stayed up overnight to make sure everything was ready, cooking up 75-pounds of black-eyed peas. My family and I dropped in on the cooking operation last night to prep the bowls for the peas. During that time, I was blessed to fellowship with friends, and brothers. The time shared with my teammates, supporters, and this community is something I truly look forward to every time.
It was a true blessing to be able to give back today. In just two hours, we gave out over 220 bags of food. When we were finished, I took the remaining food to the “Hope Station” so that those less fortunate would have a hot, “home-cooked” meal waiting for them.
After we finished up and were driving home, I asked my family for their thoughts. I also spoke to my oldest daughter’s best friend, who was riding with us and helped during the event. When I asked her what the experience meant to her, she told me that she had no words. She said it really moved her and made her feel like she was part of doing something good for the community and it made her realize how fortunate she is.
I didn’t ask for donations or money. People graciously offered, but my goal was simply to give out food and use the blessings that have been bestowed upon me to give back to this community that believes in me and continues to support me.
Later in the day, my family and I stopped by Wilson Health and Rehabilitation Center and dropped in on a Bingo game. We were happy to serve food to some of the staff and residents, with hugs from the twins included. We also provided lunch meals to several downtown businesses. Being able to give back to those who have taken care of me and who continue to believe in me meant more than words can express.
Thank you to everyone who came out to help. There is no way I could do this alone, and I will always be grateful!
Finally, and most importantly, thank you to my family for getting up early, braving the cold, and working tirelessly to make sure we fed as many people as possible. Their love, sacrifice, and support mean everything to me!
